UK eye care model ‘should be followed by Europe’

A new study on models of delivery of primary eye care across Europe has applauded the UK’s emphasis on the work being carried out by optometrists.

It states that this model is as safe for patients as models where ophthalmologists take the lead and predicts countries where that is the norm such as France will require a significant increase in the numbers of primary eye professionals to cater for demographic changes which will increase age-related eye conditions.

The study, Comparative Analysis of Delivery of Primary Eye Care in Three European Countries has been produced by the Department of Medicinal Management at the University of Duisburg-Essen and is released this month.

Commissioned by
the European Council of Optometry and Optics (ECOO) the university department investigated three systems of eye care in European countries in relation to aspects of cost and provision.

The health economic study results show that a greater integration of optometrists
in the area of primary eye care is safe, cost-effective and structurally necessary.

In the likes of Germany, where optometrists and ophthalmologists currently share responsibilities, the provision of eye care would have collapsed says the report if optometrists had not taken on essential tasks in primary care.
