The Importance of Clear Vision on Darker Evenings.

With the clocks falling back and autumn turning inevitably into winter, the risk of being on the wrong side of the law due to poor vision has increased. This is particularly true for the over 40s, as drivers of this age tend to experience more difficulties in the darker months.

Despite this fact, studies have shown that one in five people over the age of 40 are on the roads in these dark months knowing their eyesight isn’t as good as it could be, with five per cent admitting they haven’t had a sight test for at least 10 years!

Driving with uncorrected vision is not only a criminal offence that can carry a heavy fine, add penalty points to your license and possible driving disqualification, it can also invalidate your car insurance.

This highlights the importance of having your eyes tested on a regular basis, especially when over the age of 40. There are also some further steps you can take to make sure you’re as safe on the roads as you can be at this time of the year.

  • Always wear your prescription glasses or contact lenses when driving.
  • Adding an anti-glare coating to your glasses can help reduce the brightness of oncoming headlights.
  • You should never use tinted lenses or sunglasses whilst driving in low light conditions.
  • Keep your windscreen clean and ensure you have plenty of screen-wash at any one time.
  • Take an extra ten minutes on the colder mornings to give you enough time de-ice your windscreen.
